History of Grama Panchayat
Elankunnapuzha Grama Panchayat is a village rich in history. Malippuram, one of the important regions of the Panchayat, was once an ancient port. The name “Malipuram” itself means seashore. Salt meant for distribution in the Kingdom of Kochi was brought from Bombay to this port. Large warehouses used for storing salt existed here until recent times. Salt tax was one of the major sources of revenue for the Kochi Kingdom.
A large flag mast once stood at Malipuram. During the daytime, flags were used and at night lamps were lit to guide ships towards the port. Beneath the sea, a special layer of green mud had formed, allowing ships to anchor safely during the monsoon season without being affected by strong winds and storms. Such a mud bank extended from Njarakkal to Purakkad in the south.
When viewed from the sea, the Elankunnapuzha region appeared like a moving river. It is believed that this is how the place got its name. This has been recorded by V.V.K. Valath in the book “Kerala Sthalanaama Charithrangal” (History of Place Names in Kerala).
The waves of the Sahodara Movement created echoes in Ochanthuruth, located in Elamkunnapuzha Panchayat, even earlier than in many other regions of Vypinkara. The village’s cultural heritage is further enriched by the presence of several libraries registered under the library movement. The Asan Memorial Reading Room was established during the renaissance period itself.
Many talented artists and sports personalities who excelled in various fields have emerged from this village. Eighteen educational institutions have helped guide people of all castes and religions towards knowledge and public education. Facilities for higher education in the nearby city also contributed to the cultural growth of the region.
The Panchayat is home to places of worship established by various communities, where both small and large festivals are celebrated. The Arattu festival of the Subrahmanya Temple in Elamkunnapuzha is particularly famous. Temple art forms such as Kurathiyattam, Ottan Thullal, and Kathakali are performed in connection with the festival.
Numerous cultural, artistic, and sports organizations are actively functioning within the Panchayat.
