A Panchayat is a collective body of elected representatives formed to carry out the administrative functions of the Panchayati Raj Institutions system. In the case of a Gram Panchayat, it is the main committee responsible for implementing the decisions of the Gram Sabha and managing day-to-day governance.Main Components of a PanchayatPresident: The head of the Panchayat. Presides over meetings and supervises the overall functioning of the Panchayat.Vice President: Performs the duties of the President in their absence.Ward Members: Elected representatives from each ward of the Panchayat.Standing Committees: Subcommittees formed to facilitate decision-making in areas such as finance, development, welfare, health, and education.

History of Grama Panchayat

Elankunnapuzha Grama Panchayat is a village rich in history. Malippuram, one of the important regions of the Panchayat, was once an ancient port. The name “Malipuram” itself means seashore. Salt meant for distribution in the Kingdom of Kochi was brought from Bombay to this port. Large warehouses used for storing salt existed here until recent times. Salt tax was one of the major sources of revenue for the Kochi Kingdom.
